The Unique Look of Bubble Nails
For many years, we’ve seen nail trends come and go, most of them involving modifying the length of the nail, the shape of the tips, or the designs on the nails themselves. Swarovski crystals adorning nails, nails with tips so sharp they can cause injury, nails so long they resemble claws – nail trends encompass a wide range of styles and designs.
What you’ve probably never seen before, though, are bubble nails. Bubble nails have been styled to look thicker, in stark contrast to the thinness that acrylic nails aim for. This style has been around since 2009, but bubble nails are just gaining popularity these days, especially on photo-sharing platform Instagram, where thousands of users are sharing photos of their own unique take on bubble-nail manicures.
To achieve the bubble look for the nails, liquid acrylic is built up on the nail and sculpted until the customer gets the look he or she wants to achieve. The nail has to be thin at the cuticle, so the round of acrylic is placed at the center of the nail before being shaped into a bubble-like dome, which slopes down to the tip of the nail. Think of smooth, miniature hills placed on the nails.
Understandably, this can be tricky because the curve of the bubble has to be perfect. And then there’s the matter of designing the bubble itself. Some women choose brightly colored nail polish, while others go for multiple layers of glittery nail polish. Neon colors, gradient effects, and Hawaiian-inspired designs are also popular among people who chose bubble manicures.
Related to bubble nails, hump nails are also gaining popularity. Hump nails are built on longer nails compared to bubble nails, with the surface of the nails having more of a gently sloping curve than a hill-like look. Some bubble nail lovers go one step further and create the illusion of having folded-over nails, by using the bubble-nail technique combined with false nails attached to the tips of her nails.
Bubble nails may inspire creativity or cause disgust, but the fact remains that bubble nails and similar styles shouldn’t be worn for too long. The huge amount of acrylic, liquid and otherwise, used on the nails can cause long-term damage and thinning of the nails.
